bFJ Statement of Faith

This page outlines the core beliefs held by the proprietor and moderator of byfaithjustified.com and what he teaches his household.

The below information is from Holy Scripture summarized by using the 39 Articles of Religion, and little from Luther's  Small Catechism

Sufficiency of Holy Scripture

Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for Salvation: Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture we do understand those canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church. —Article 6, Thirty-Nine Articles

(It's important to note that certain religious groups, such as Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons, may deviate from these true teachings and rely on inaccurate translations to support their unsubstantiated beliefs.)

Scripture Alone

The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine.

Grace Alone

God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.

Faith Alone

By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him. It is a Extra Nos Salvation

Triune God

Holy Trinity: There is but one living and true God, everlasting, without body, parts, or passions; of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness; the Maker, and Preserver of all things both visible and invisible. And in unity of this Godhead there be three Persons, of one substance, power, and eternity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. —Article 1, Thirty-Nine Articles

the Father

The omnipotent and benevolent Creator of all existence, whose sovereignty and mercy are boundless. It is crucial to understand the immutable nature of God, who remains constant throughout time. The God of the past is the same God today. This understanding also encompasses the recognition of God's vengeful and mighty attributes, as well as His swift judgment upon those He deems deserving. In His justice, God is always righteous and equitable.

( the Bible, and my understanding )

Jesus Christ, the Son

The Son, which is the Word of the Father, begotten from everlasting of the Father, the very and eternal God, and of one substance with the Father, took Man's nature in the womb of the blessed Virgin, of her substance: so that two whole and perfect Natures, that is to say, the Godhead and Manhood, were joined together in one Person, never to be divided, whereof is one Christ, very God, and very Man; who truly suffered, was crucified, dead, and buried, to reconcile his Father to us, and to be a sacrifice, not only for original guilt, but also for actual sins of men.

Christ did truly rise again from death, and took again his body, with flesh, bones, and all things appertaining to the perfection of Man's nature; wherewith he ascended into Heaven, and there sitteth, until he return to judge all Men at the last day.

—Articles 2 and 4 of the Thirty-Nine Articles

the Holy Spirit

The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory, with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God.

The Holy Spirit, an integral component of the triune God, plays a pivotal role in fostering faith through the Word of God the Father and the Sacraments. The Holy Spirit provides faith, peace, guidance, revelation of truth, correction, and assistance. ( HE does so much we can not comprehend it all)

It is crucial to recognize that God is not the source of confusion. Therefore, it is illogical to assert that the Holy Spirit would induce disorder or confusion.

(Article 5, Thirty-Nine Articles, the Bible, and my understanding)

Free Will

Man after the fall of Adam is such, that he cannot turn and prepare himself, by his own natural strength and good works, to faith; and calling upon God.Wherefore we have no power to do good works pleasant and acceptable to God, without the grace of God by Christ.

Let one look to the Scriptures, and the history of the church's teachings against self righteousness or one's own ability to pick God without the Holy Spirit acting first if they choose to challenge this doctrine. The history and the scriptures are against them.

Predestination & Election

Article 17: Of Predestination and Election: Predestination to Life is the everlasting purpose of God, whereby (before the foundations of the world were laid) he hath constantly decreed by his counsel secret to us, to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in Christ out of mankind, and to bring them by Christ to everlasting salvation, as vessels made to honour. Wherefore, they which be endued with so excellent a benefit of God, be called according to God's purpose by his Spirit working in due season: they through Grace obey the calling: they be justified freely: they be made sons of God by adoption: they be made like the image of his only-begotten Son Jesus Christ: they walk religiously in good works, and at length, by God's mercy, they attain to everlasting felicity. As the godly consideration of Predestination, and our Election in Christ, is full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort to godly persons, and such as feel in themselves the working of the Spirit of Christ, mortifying the works of the flesh, and their earthly members, and drawing up their mind to high and heavenly things, as well because it doth greatly establish and confirm their faith of eternal Salvation to be enjoyed through Christ as because it doth fervently kindle their love towards God: So, for curious and carnal persons, lacking the Spirit of Christ, to have continually before their eyes the sentence of God's Predestination, is a most dangerous downfall, whereby the Devil doth thrust them either into desperation, or into wretchlessness of most unclean living, no less perilous than desperation. Furthermore, we must receive God's promises in such wise, as they be generally set forth to us in Holy Scripture: and, in our doings, that Will of God is to be followed, which we have expressly declared unto us in the Word of God.

Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion

Who are the Elect

Individuals who receive and believe the Gospel attain the eternal life as described in the Holy Scriptures. God instills faith in Christ and grants forgiveness through Him. God employs the Word and baptism to bestow saving faith upon the chosen ones. Salvation is exclusively achieved through justification by faith, and it is solely by God's grace that one is saved through Jesus Christ. This process involves the divine collaboration of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The elect are those who are justified solely by faith. Therefore, one should seek assurance outside of oneself, relying solely on faith in Christ for such assurance. While the process of satisfaction is significant, one must place unwavering trust in Christ alone.

Justification

Article 11: Of the Justification of Man: We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by Faith, and not for our own works or deservings. Wherefore, that we are justified by Faith only, is a most wholesome Doctrine, and very full of comfort, as more largely is expressed in the Homily of Justification.

Thirty-Nine Articles

Christ’s Atonement

The beneficiaries of the Atonement are individuals who possess faith. These individuals are chosen by God through a process of election. Faith is a divine gift that is undeserved yet bestowed upon certain individuals. The redemptive power of the Atonement is reserved for those who are justified by their faith. Justification is achieved through the grace of God and the exercise of faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus' sacrifice was not only a payment for sin but also a victory over death, the devil, and hell, establishing an everlasting kingdom of grace.

Good Works

Good works do not justify us or earn us anything. They serve as an indication or evidence of the Holy Spirit. Let us place our trust solely in Faith.

Good works should never be bragged about or compared to those of others.True good works are only possible because of the One who has enabled you.

This Hymn is a beautiful, short summary:

Salvation unto Us Has Come

Faith clings to Jesus cross alone And rest in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known with love and hope increasing. For faith alone can justify; Works serve our neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living.

The two sacraments of our Lord

Sacraments ordained of Christ be not only badges or tokens of Christian profession, but rather they be certain sure witnesses, and effectual signs of grace, and God's good will towards us, by the which he doth work invisibly in us, and doth not only quicken, but also strengthen and confirm our Faith in him. There are two Sacraments ordained of Christ our Lord in the Gospel, that is to say, Baptism, and the Supper of the Lord (Understanding from The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion)

Baptism

Baptism is not simple water only, but it is the water comprehended in God's command and connected with God's Word.

Christ, our Lord, says in the last chapter of Matthew : Go ye into all the world and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

It works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.

Christ, our Lord, says in the last chapter of Mark : He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

It is not the water indeed that does the work, but the word of God which is in and with the water, and faith, which trusts such word of God in the water. For without the word of God the water is simple water and no baptism. But with the word of God it is a baptism, that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of regeneration in the Holy Ghost, as St. Paul says, Titus, chapter three: By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ, our Savior, that, being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying.

Baptizing with water signifies that the old Adam in us should, by daily contrition and repentance, be drowned and die with all sins and evil lusts, and, again, a new man daily come forth and arise; who shall live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

St. Paul says Romans, chapter 6 : We are buried with Christ by Baptism into death, that, like as He was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

God's gifts are for all ages of people. The children of believers should be treated as believers themselves. Train up a child in the faith they will not depart. It is God's work on the child. Why wait? It's not a personal work of obedience it is a gift of God

The Lord's Supper [Holy Eucharist]

The Supper of the Lord is not only a sign of the love that Christians ought to have among themselves one to another, but rather it is a Sacrament of our Redemption by Christ's death: insomuch that to such as rightly, worthily, and with faith, receive the same, the Bread which we break is a partaking of the Body of Christ; and likewise the Cup of Blessing is a partaking of the Blood of Christ.

When the Lord instituted HIS Supper it wasn't a time to use metaphorical language or symbolic tone. It was a time to say what HE meant and mean what HE said. It's a sacrament that's being issued to do in remembrance of HIM.

I firmly believe and teach my family that the Body and Blood of Christ are genuinely present and distributed to those who partake in the Lord's Supper. I do not attempt to rationalize how this occurs but simply accept that the Lord declared, "THIS IS MY BODY" and "THIS IS MY BLOOD." It is crucial to understand that this is not a repetition of the Lord Christ's one-time sacrifice. Rather, it is a sacrifice of praise, thanksgiving, and the offering of our old nature, presenting ourselves as living sacrifices. This act serves as a remembrance of what Christ has accomplished and continues to do, calling us to focus on Christ and His crucifixion until His return.

While the elements remain bread and wine in their physical form, they also simultaneously the Body and Blood of Jesus. This true and real presence is inextricably linked to the elements in and under through the Word of God. When we approach the table, we encounter Christ and receive forgiveness. The Lord's Supper is a means of grace, a gift bestowed by God. However, it is crucial to recognize that those who partake of the Lord's Supper in an unworthy manner bring condemnation upon themselves for sinning against the Body of Christ.

It is essential to note that only baptized Christians are to be admitted to the Lord's Supper. Furthermore, the only elements to be used are those specified in Scripture: bread and wine.
